ATLANTA, Dec 21, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Mirant Corporation (NYSE: MIR) announced today that newly constructed flue gas desulfurization systems (FGDs) at its three coal-fired electric generating stations in Maryland are operational.
This milestone is the culmination of a multi-year effort to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the seven coal units (2,473 megawatts of capacity).
In addition to the FGDs, Mirant recently installed selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) on three of the coal-fired units at its Chalk Point and Morgantown generating stations as part of its overall air pollution control strategy. Together, the FGDs and the SCR systems will also reduce mercury emissions. These air pollution controls are capable of reducing emissions of SO2, NOx and mercury by approximately 98 percent, 90 percent and 80 percent, respectively, for these coal-fired electric generating units.
"Mirant's investment in these emission reduction technologies, which is expected to total $1.674 billion, allows Mirant to meet the air quality mandates of Maryland's Healthy Air Act while continuing to safely provide efficient and reliable electricity to the greater Washington, D.C. region," said Edward R. Muller, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mirant.
The air quality control program also results in positive economic benefit by creating at least sixty new full time positions at Mirant.
